Third revision of the global surface seawater dimethyl sulfide climatology (DMS-Rev3)

چکیده
Abstract. This paper presents an updated estimation of the bottom-up global surface seawater dimethyl sulfide (DMS) climatology. update, called DMS-Rev3, is third its kind and includes five significant changes from last climatology, L11 (Lana et al., 2011), that was released about a decade ago. The first change inclusion new observations have become available over decade, creating database 873 539 leading to ∼ 18-fold increase in raw data as compared estimation. second improvements handling, processing, filtering, avoid biases due different observation frequencies which result measurement techniques. Thirdly, we incorporate dynamic seasonal observed geographic boundaries ocean biogeochemical provinces. fourth involves refinement interpolation algorithm used fill missing data. Lastly, upgraded smoothing based on DMS variability length scales (VLS) helps reproduce more realistic distribution concentration results show DMS-Rev3 estimates annual mean be 2.26 nM (2.39 without sea-ice mask), i.e., 4 % lower than previous However, regional differences 100 are observed. sea-to-air flux estimated at 27.1 TgS yr−1, L11, although, like distribution, large were largest high regions such polar oceans, although oceanic under-sampled past also between revisions Finally, reduces previously patchiness productivity regions. along with algorithm, can found online repository: https://doi.org/10.17632/hyn62spny2.1 (Mahajan, 2021).

Comparison of global climatological maps of sea surface dimethyl sulfide
[1] We have examined differences in regional and seasonal variability among seven global climatologies of sea-surface dimethyl sulfide (DMS) concentrations. We found large differences between recent climatologies and that typically used by most atmospheric sulfur models. The relative uncertainty (1s/mean) in the latitudinal distribution of the annual mean DMS concentration increases from about ...
متن کاملDimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emissions from biomass burning in Australia
[1] We identify dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) as the major reduced sulfur-containing gas emitted from bushfires in Australia’s Northern Territory. Like dimethyl sulfide (DMS), DMDS is oxidized in the atmosphere to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and methane sulfonic acid (MSA), which are intermediates in the formation of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The mixing ratios of DMDS and DMS were the highest we have ever de...
متن کاملGrazing-activated production of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) by two clones of Emiliania huxleyi
Emiliania huxleyi clones CCMP 370 and CCMP 373 produced similar amounts of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) during axenic exponential growth, averaging 109 mM internal DMSP. Both clones had detectable DMSP lyase activity, as measured by production of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) during in vitro assays of crude cell preparations, but activities and conditions differed considerably between clones. Clo...
متن کاملEffect of Grazing-Mediated Dimethyl Sulfide (DMS) Production on the Swimming Behavior of the Copepod Calanus helgolandicus
Chemical interactions play a fundamental role in the ecology of marine foodwebs. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a ubiquitous marine trace gas that acts as a bioactive compound by eliciting foraging behavior in a range of marine taxa including the copepod Temora longicornis. Production of DMS can rapidly increase following microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton. Here, we investigated whether grazi...
